How Solana reaches sub-second speed, what it powers, and the trade-offs behind the performance
Ethereum proved you could run applications on a blockchain. Solana was built to answer a follow-up question: what if a blockchain could feel as fast and cheap as the apps people already use? The decentralization trade-off. Processing this much data so quickly demands powerful, expensive hardware to run a validator. Critics argue that higher hardware requirements mean fewer independent operators can afford to participate, which makes the network more concentrated than Bitcoin or Ethereum, where the goal is to let almost anyone run a node on modest equipment. It's a real philosophical divide: raw performance on one side, maximal decentralization on the other.
A history of outages. This is the honest caveat that matters most. Solana has, on several occasions, suffered network outages — periods where the chain stopped producing blocks entirely and had to be restarted by its validators, sometimes for hours. These were often triggered by overwhelming transaction spam. The network has invested heavily in reliability upgrades since, and outages have become less frequent, but the track record is part of the picture. It optimises for a different goal. Solana isn't trying to be Ethereum, and comparing them as "better or worse" misses the point. Ethereum favours a vast application ecosystem and maximal decentralization; Solana favours speed and cost. Common mistakes to avoid
- Sending SOL or Solana tokens to the wrong network. A Solana address is not an Ethereum address. Solana addresses look nothing like Ethereum's
0x...format — sending across incompatible networks can mean permanent loss. Always confirm you're on the Solana network before you send. - Forgetting to keep a little SOL for fees.
